The cold-sensitive film for the nose turns to the color "red" when exposed to cold temperatures below 59°F and changes back to its original color at a warmer temperature. When the cup is purchased, the color of the nose is translucent. (Please view second picture in the photos section of the listing so you can see the translucent film.)
